City and sky

These quick diagrams were reflections on my time in Rajasthan and Delhi and the relationship there of the streets to the buildings to the sky. The rooftop living means people have a much more immediate relationship with the sky from their houses – it’s not unusual to see people flying kites from the roofs of their houses, or sleeping out under the stars on hot nights. The streets, meanwhile, are narrow and darker and shaded over by the tall buildings and the washing strung across the street to dry and the clusters of stalls and canopies. It’s the inverse of British living, where you see the sky from the streets more than from inside the houses.
