Ships and Photographs

After five days in Trieste on study tour, I was interested to read today of Edward Burtynsky’s exhibition of photographs of the docks at Chittagong and of ships.  On the edge of Trieste there’s a large abandoned dockyard on the edge of the city, and I was busy exploring different ways of documenting the city and of using photography, and was reading Susan Sontag.

There’s a sense of loss, of the ghosts of technologies and materials and mechanisms, which is very present in Trieste and in Burtynsky’s images.
